ABSTRACT

EVEN a woman so little interested in her husband as Mrs Ting might have been expected to show some concern at his absence from home all night, but when her attention was drawn to the fact by an amah the next morning, she remained so indifferent that the servant thought it unnecessary to make any further inquiries concerning her master’s whereabouts. We, of course, can well understand that the lady’s mind was too much occupied with thoughts of David, who she knew was already in the temple, to leave room for other anxieties. At any rate, whatever the reason, the hours passed and nobody in Red Hall raised an alarm.
