I DO not pretend to know what passed between Feng and his wife, after the latter’s release from the police-station, but it is certain that within a matter of days she had left Shanghai to return to Hong Kong, where so far as we are concerned she disappears from this story. Last year, when I was in those parts, I heard she was still alive and had taken up residence in a Buddhist nunnery some miles out in the New Territories.
