ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the temporal and spatial evolution of industrial parks in China. Although China’s industrial parks have led to social and ecological problems such as widening regional income gaps, reduced local identity, and serious environmental pollution during the period of development, they have effectively triggered economic growth and technological innovation, making China the second-largest economy in the world. Effective support from local government and intermediary organizations, knowledge and technology spillovers between enterprises, entrepreneurship and social networks, and innovation in scientific research institutions undoubtedly provide possible explanations.
