ABSTRACT

This book is about the science of face perception. Our faces offer many different types of socially important information, and we will discuss what is known about how people decipher these different messages from looking at faces. First, though, we need to understand faces as biological structures and how this affects the way we perceive and interpret them. Faces are intricate structures, the product of complex evolution to deliver their many messages. Our brains have evolved to decipher these messages with some elaborate, perhaps purpose-built, neural machinery.
