ABSTRACT

According to Stig L. Andersson, the reason why SLA's preferred design principles may seem wild to some people is because it has not been arranged according to modern rational ideals of ‘beauty’ that cut across wide swathes of art and design history since the Second World War. There are many ways to understand wildness and nature. During the 19th century green parks were designed in a picturesque style serving a recreational purpose mirrored in understandings of the pastoral landscape deprived of buildings. SLA provides the experience of nature acting outside our control, but in reality imperfection and mess are controlled and cultivated. The rules of thumb mentioned are only a selection of tools that can help represent and stage urban nature, and the degree to which SLA intervenes and how much ‘wildness’ is tolerated are seldom determined by SLA alone. Stig L. Andersson is clearly inspired by Japanese aesthetics.
