ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the specific application of horticulture to social farming aiming to contain the negativities of mafia. In these activities, the social and environmental dimensions of the value chain are put in the forefront. This chapter provides special attention to an assessment of the impact of the 2019–21 COVID-19 pandemic on food-related activities. We provide a report of investigations carried out in three antimafia farms explored in recent years. The most important in revenue terms is the Placido Rizzotto Cooperative in Sicily. In Campania, we explore a network of antimafia farms organized under the heading of NCO. We pay particular attention to one of these farms, the Eureka Cooperative, which has become well known internationally for its wines. The third case is the Coraggio Cooperative in Rome which represents an innovative model for revitalizing vacant lands in the nation’s capital.
