ABSTRACT

There are reported cases in the past year. The MSC Flaminia is a German container ship which caught fire on 14 July 2012, forcing the crew to abandon ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. After the fire had been brought under control, the stricken container ship was towed to Europe and arrived at Wilhelmshaven, Germany, on 9 September 2012. Then there was the xplosion on board the Hanjin Pennsylvania while she was sailing between Singapore and Suez. The vessel was 88 mi south of Sri Lanka. The fire was under control on 25 November 2002. The vessel was towed to Singapore, where she arrived on 4 January 2003. The Sanchi oil tanker collision occurred on 6 January 2018 when the Panamanian-flagged, Iranian-owned tanker Sanchi, with a full natural gas condensate cargo, sailing from Iran to South Korea, collided with the Hong Kong–flagged cargo ship CF Crystal 160 nmi off Shanghai, China. Sanchi caught fire shortly after the collision; after burning and drifting for over a week, it sank on 14 January. None of Sanchi’s 32 crew members survived.
