ABSTRACT

The chairmen and members of the regional authorities and health boards, and the chairmen of the area health authorities are appointed by the health minister concerned after consultation with professional, local authority, university and other interests. The members of the area health authorities are appointed by the regional health authorities in England, and the health ministers in Wales except for some members appointed by the corresponding local authorities, and at least one nominated by the university concerned. The contrary argument is that in fact there is a unified health service, and that it is sheer timidity or false political sensitivity that prevents the intelligent application of a national supplies policy by the Secretary of State. The responsibility for licensing the production and manufacture of drugs is vested in the Health Ministers who are assisted by the Committee on Safety of Medicines, the Medicines Commission and the Medicines Inspectorate of the Public and Environmental Health Division.
