ABSTRACT

The Scottish hippy folk group, The Incredible String Band, who were especially popular in the United States and whose music was a happy rambling pot-pourri of ideas and enthusiasms, similarly explored mystical concepts like reality, illusion and reincarnation - particularly in their Eastern context, although they later turned to scientology. Occult and mystical themes seem to have exercised a surprising influence on pop lyrics since the late 1960s — even in cases where the performer was operating in a musical medium quite removed from the more free-form frameworks of music, as found in the raga. In Germany itself the growth of cosmic music has been a widespread phenomenon involving a larger spectrum of musicians. The operation began in 1973 as a music complex geared to linking electronic music and science fiction. Inner space' music is primarily important because of its commitment to exploring sensory and tactile inputs, twisting our awareness, evoking images.
