ABSTRACT

This chapter explores common challenges clients face as they let go of the diet mindset and make peace with food. While the guidelines of using internal cues of hunger and fullness to decide when, what, and how much to eat may sound simple, clients are undoing years of eating patterns that include dieting, rebound eating, and bingeing. Now that clients have been introduced to how to reconnect with physical hunger, choose foods that satisfy them, and recognize when they are full, they will confront obstacles as they move in the direction of becoming attuned eaters, and they need to develop strategies to meet these challenges. This chapter uses a multitude of clinical examples to illustrate how mental health professionals can assist clients in navigating these various roadblocks.
