ABSTRACT

This chapter explores participants’ orientation to truth and honesty. In terms of trustworthiness, this component is about being perceived as someone pursuing openness, transparency and access to all information relevant to both self and others. The chapter considers the default setting to be interactants living their lives, including the moments when they exchange facts and information for a range of different purposes, and are not treating that exchange as anything out of the ordinary. Orienting to truth and honesty often means recounting more than just the simple facts, because there may be other relevant facts to include. An aspect of orienting to precision and detail is being devoted to getting to the bottom of things by pursuing clarity and detail, not hiding more or less important facts, getting all information out, and not holding back any information that would have made a difference for other participants had they known about it.
