ABSTRACT

One of the biggest differences between traditional in-person school and online education is the independent or asynchronous instruction and the amount of time it takes to design. Particularly with young learners who are non- or early readers, delivering instruction and asking students to complete activities independently online requires a multifaceted approach. In this chapter, readers will be introduced to culturally responsive and brain-based approaches that our teachers used to design the lessons including research-informed ideas on how to make online independent work accessible for young students. Readers will see examples of independent lessons, types of activities and resources teachers used during lessons, and an exploration of the role of feedback in online education.
