ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the substantive rights that all on-demand workers need, including rights to minimum rates of pay; rights to work health and safety; and insurance against workplace illness and injury. The chapter considers the development of ‘safe rates’ schemes in various jurisdictions around the globe (including Korea, California in the United States, and Australia) to demonstrate the intrinsic connection between minimum rates of pay and conditions of work, and safety at work.
