ABSTRACT

Free public education from grade 1 through high school has been with us since the first settlers landed on Plymouth Rock in the 1600s. The federal government collects much statistical evidence. Schools in the US have been around since the 1600s. Children of all ages learned together. For hundreds of years, young women served as the teachers. Basics taught were reading, arithmetic, and writing. Beginning in the 1980s some educators and researchers began to question why only a quantitative approach. By the 21st century, the movement to look at other ways of answering questions expanded incrementally. Researchers are exploring the use of technology to gather data. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
