ABSTRACT

The role of the researcher is critical in all aspects of the research process. A distinguishing feature of qualitative research is that the researcher engages in self-reflection. This chapter explains reflexivity and subjectivity/objectivity. Through their eyes and ears, data are gathered and interpreted. Through their eyes, meaning is brought from an amalgam of words, images, and interpretations. The situation becomes more complex when studying those who are underprivileged or face human suffering. In the days of the pandemic of 2020 and 2021, we learn almost daily that we are awaiting results of experimental studies about the effects of one or another drug on keeping people from contracting COVID-19. Achieve a shift of focus away from a view of research methods as objectified procedures to be learnt by researchers, and toward the development of researchers who craft procedures integral to the environments in which they operate.
