ABSTRACT

Chapter 8, “Nature Guarding “Her Treasures” in Local Hero (1983) and Fubar: Balls to the Wall (2010),” demonstrates how select oil comedies expose oil as the “shit and sex” (LeMenager 92) of entertainment and reveal the stink behind the flare. By drawing on comic tropes, individual and communal stories, and a productive nostalgia, we assert the oil comedies Local Hero and Fubar: Balls to the Wall begin to expose the smell. Instead of suggesting oil and the environment around it can live interdependently, Local Hero and Fubar: Balls to the Wall reveal the real costs of oil extraction to both human and nonhuman nature.
