ABSTRACT

The purposes of the research were to discover something of the level of involvement by people of ethnic minority origin in sport and physical recreation, their preferred activities, and the factors which had a bearing on their participation. There were clearly two sides to the equation. On the one hand it was necessary to find out the extent to which providers were actively seeking to provide equal access to all and we have a good deal to say about that in chapter 4. On the other hand, there were the people themselves: people whose personal, national and ethnic histories were far removed from those of the white British majority. To understand their intellectual, emotional and social responses to the constant challenges posed by British society, it seemed that a little knowledge about them might provide a basis for intelligent empathy.
