ABSTRACT

This chapter explores professional identity and how we might find a way of conveying what we do in session to those outside the room. Graduate school focuses on learning the theory and practice of counseling and often does not have ample time to teach new clinicians about professional identity. As a result, we have to learn how to cultivate a professional presence that communicates to others what we are like in session. We can take our professional identities out into marketing and networking situations to generate more referrals. We can also be ambassadors for the profession conveying to others that going to therapy is a worthwhile pursuit.
