ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors address the concepts of and developments surrounding algorithms, artificial intelligence (AI), and Big Data in the commission of cybercrime offenses. While these terms do surface in other chapters of the text, concerted effort is spent here exploring the meaning and dispelling misunderstandings about each concept. For sure, the material in this chapter represents some of the most recent research in cybercrime offending and emerging trends in discourse. For the layperson, this chapter may appear as one of the more intimidating, as terms like algorithmic calculations, Big Data mining, and AI learning can seem more apropos in sci-fi vernacular than criminal justice. However, ever since the advent of CompStat in policing and the expansion of national data repositories like the FBI Uniform Crime Reports, data and mass-level data manipulation have been mainstay considerations for the crime scholar and practitioner alike. Thus, in some ways, the appearance of these terms in cybercrime dialogue is/was inevitable.
