ABSTRACT

Unit 8 examines skills and competencies for applying for promotion. It begins by identifying the key skills and competencies that students will need for promotion application such as “Writing an effective promotion request letter” and “Knowing how to negotiate with one’s line manager or supervisor”. Based on the identified skills and competencies, the unit moves on to setting learning outcomes and designing lessons to teach them. It then offers sample lesson plans and learning materials that readers of the book can either adapt or adopt for their own classrooms. The last section of Unit 8 presents tasks and activities designed to assess students’ learning. The unit also includes reflection activities for the reader to make links between the theories discussed in the chapter and their own pedagogical practices, and extension tasks based on video clips and extra materials on the main topics of the unit. This is complemented with cultural and technology notes, language corners, and insights from research, all related to the discussions in the unit, and an annotated bibliography at the end of the unit.
