ABSTRACT
A discussion which aims to give precise meanings to various terms usually needs, to begin with, some rather vague terms to indicate the general area within which distinctions are being made. For this reason, I shall deliberately use a certain term in a vague way. The term in question is ‘refer’, also its cognates, ‘reference’, ‘referent’ (meaning ‘thing referred to’), etc.
