ABSTRACT

The Hotel Magdalena designed by Lake|Flato is deeply rooted in place in its South Congress neighborhood's connection to music in Austin, Texas. The 89-room hotel wraps around a lush courtyard that integrates seven Heritage live oak trees across the sloping site. This is the first mass timber hotel in North America, helping to reduce the project's estimated global warming potential by 10–38%. The typical guest room layout locates the closet and bathroom functions along one side with operable windows and doors at each end, providing natural ventilation and a variety of natural light conditions. Exterior-covered circulation spaces act as a giant porch that links the four distinct hotel buildings, surround the courtyard and the pool, and encourage you to stay out-of-doors.
