ABSTRACT

AutoCamp Joshua Tree is the fourth AutoCamp location to open, with more to follow, often sited in areas that connect to important sensitive landscapes. Their approach is to build as lightly on the land as possible, with lodging providing in custom-designed Airstream trailers, tiny cabins, or canvas tents that are supported by a modest clubhouse building. Joshua Tree is located in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, north of Palm Springs, California on land first occupied by people of the Pinto Culture. The area became a National Monument in 1936 and a National Park in 1994. The clubhouse design blends mid-century modern elegance with rustication, reflecting the artistic spirit of Joshua Tree, including pottery referencing the indigenous people of Cahuilla and Mojave. The clubhouse and private meeting space were designed by HKS with interiors designed by Shannon Niehenke of Narrative Design Studio. While the exterior of the eight-and-a-half-foot wide custom-designed Airstream trailers have the typical metal cladding, the interiors include natural finishes such as quartz surfaces, walnut veneer cabinets, real wood flooring, and natural stone Calacatta tiles in the showers.
