ABSTRACT

Tom Kundig of Seattle and New York City-based firm Olson Kundig designed the Rolling Huts for a site along the Methow River in north central Washington State. The six cabins, just 250 square feet each, are arranged in a “herd” formation, which spatially provides privacy, autonomy, and collectiveness to the guests. Each hut has an almost equal-sized private, covered Ipe-clad deck space, with views of mountains. The little huts are lifted above the ground and flood plain of the river valley, above the winter snow drift depths, and out of the summer bug plane, sitting lightly on the land. Both the exterior and interior materials are, as Kundig says, “tough as nails.” The exterior cold-rolled steel skin, interior ACX fir plywood walls, and abundant glass provide for low maintenance materials of these cabins embedded in nature.
