ABSTRACT

Chapters 1 and 2 explain what the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP) is, explore its long-term history, and examine the United States’ unique position as a free country that confines more youth than any industrialized country in the world. This chapter examines how adverse practices in schools, such as declining school funding (which includes funding equity and funding variations), resegregation of schools by race and class, zero tolerance disciplinary policies, and the increased utilization and federal funding of police officers in schools, increase the chances of a child entering the STPP.
