ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors establish the importance of using pedagogical practices that combine student-centered learning with social-emotional learning (SEL) to motivate and effectively help students develop the skills necessary to become effective, responsible citizens. In fact, the authors contend that student-centered learning implies SEL; hence, the chapter subtitle “You Can’t Have One without the Other.” The premise of the book is that the most effective way to improve student learning and our schools at minimal cost and without the amount of restructuring, that simply won’t happen, is to provide professional development to the extent that every classroom will be using pedagogical approaches to student learning that combine student-centered learning and SEL practices.
