ABSTRACT
The pre–World War II state of Ecology is surveyed. The cultural and technological changes caused by atomic energy development during World War II are described as a context for the rise of the subdiscipline of Radioecology and for the transformation for the field of Ecology as a whole, with special focus on the ecosystem concept. Concepts of ecological stress and disturbance from nuclear weapon testing are introduced.
