ABSTRACT

The LGBTQIA+ community in Latin American countries faces significant challenges. Although there have been some positive developments in recent years, including the legalization of same-sex marriages in a few Latin American countries, many people continue to face discrimination, harassment, and violence. In Latin America, the LGBTQIA+ community represents only a small fraction of the politically active population, and they are often lacking economic resources and political support. Many Latin American politicians believe that other priorities should take center stage in local politics including poverty, corruption, crime, climate change, education reform, and so forth. In Latin America today, the politics surrounding homosexuality is not straightforward and easily defined. LGBTQIA+ issues differ according to a person’s socioeconomic background and racial status. Throughout its long history, the Latin American social order has viewed homosexuality in the gloomiest of terms.
