ABSTRACT

One of the most significant environmental issues in Latin America in the twenty-first century is deforestation. The Amazon rainforest, which spans several countries, is rapidly being cleared for agriculture, mining, ranching, and other industries. Indigenous communities and rural populations are often more significantly affected by environmental degradation, while being the least able to adapt to these changes. The year 2020 was ranked among the three warmest years ever recorded for Mexico and Central America, and in the top two warmest in South America. The increase of fires in the Amazon forest has been referred to as the “Bolsonaro effect,” named after the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who was infamously anti-environmental in his language and policies, and who vociferously supported development over protection of the Amazon region. The film opens in 1909 in the Amazon rain forest in Colombia.
