ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the PlayBreak, an individual or small group playtime implemented by teachers to use the power of play and relationship to enhance their relationships with students and improve student attitudes and behaviors. The five goals of PlayBreaks are to offer relational support to students in need, improve relationships with challenging students, practice verbal and non-verbal skills for teachers to use in the classroom, reduce instructional time lost to disciplinary problems, and enhance the joy of teaching. This chapter presents the details of time and space structure for PlayBreaks conducted by teachers, including the specific materials needed for PlayBreaks. This chapter also helps teachers to identify students who will benefit from PlayBreaks.
