ABSTRACT

This chapter on PlayBreak attitudes describes the five teacher attitudes that ground PlayBreaks for success. These attitudes include valuing and respecting play as the natural language of communication and expression for children, operating from a place of genuineness and authenticity, seeking to have full acceptance and prizing of a child, striving for empathic understanding of a child, and holding a multicultural orientation toward each child. In describing these attitudes, the author encourages teachers to reflect introspectively on attitudes that they hold regarding their value of play and understanding the world of each child. The PlayBreak attitudes are essential to reaching the goals of PlayBreaks for both children and teachers.
