ABSTRACT
Using myriad of examples of children’s play, this chapter presents the role of play in child development. The author identifies and discusses the four types of play including mastery, innovative, kinship, and therapeutic play. The focus of the chapter is the support role of play in developing intellect, self-concept, relationships, and problem-solving. Play correlates with children getting ready to learn, the process of learning, and demonstrating what they have learned.
