ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author reviews the development of play through childhood as conceptualized and researched by developmental theorists. Following the trajectory of play from birth to 12 years, the author provides a clear picture of how play in children changes over time. Brain development and its role in childhood play are explored through the lens of neuroscience. This chapter presents typical characteristics, play behaviors, and challenges in specific detail for children age 3–12 years old.
