ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the different ways in which animals are harmed by humans for different purposes. The chapter considers the main practices through which humans harm nonhuman animals in institutionalized ways. To do this, it considers the main purposes for which animals are used as resources in the largest numbers. The chapter starts by addressing the use of animals for entertainment, including hunting and sport fishing, as well as circuses and other shows. It then describes the typical lives and deaths of animals used for food, in both land and aquatic farms, as well as how their deaths are like. Next, it describes how animals suffer due to fishing, a practice that kills many more animals than all vertebrate farming together. It then explains how animals are harmed for the production of clothing. Finally, it examines how invertebrates are currently being farmed and used for different purposes, including the production of clothing and food, in numbers that may be far larger than those of all vertebrates used by humans.
