ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses medication as a relatively common treatment. You are not alone when you’ve considered the question, “Should my child take medication?” Since there are no medications specifically approved for autism, the best they can do is offer symptom relief. Some children with autism have pill dysphagia which is defined as “difficulty or inability to swallow pills.” While medication can help your child, they are only one part of your child’s treatment plan. Doctors do not immediately recommend medication and advise parents to first try therapies such as behavioral, speech, occupational, or physical therapies.
