ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the research behind the effectiveness and benefits of Occupational Therapy (OT) for children, teens, and adults with autism. Parents are provided with a brief description of evidence-based interventions (relationship-based interventions, developmental skill-based programs, Sensory Integration®) commonly used to promote successful participation in daily activities and to manage sensory issues across settings (play/social interaction skills, daily living skills such as feeding and dressing, fine motor skills such as handwriting, sensory modulation skills, work/employment skills.), an overview of the qualified professionals who provide OT services (Certified Occupational Therapist [OT] and Certified Occupational Therapy

Assistants [COTA]), and common goals addressed in home, clinic, and school-based services. Guidance on home-based exercises parents can do to support and develop their child’s fine motor control and sensory development is provided.
