ABSTRACT

In the rapidly evolving organizational work climate and culture, there requires urgent attention to the adoption of outdated, ineffective, and irrelevant leadership frameworks that cause tremendous negative impact on the organizations’ sustainability, productivity, and growth. The fundamental mantra is to acknowledge that one cannot lead others well without first being able to self-lead themselves. The underlying notion of self-leadership focuses on the actions that are controlled by internal rather than external forces and it enriches adaptive performance and job satisfaction. The future of work is likely to skew towards remote working, with companies like Twitter, Square, and Microsoft allowing the majority of their employees to work from home. Leaders should prepare themselves for the future of work that will bring about further radical changes that present both instability and opportunities. Transformative leadership is essentially a participatory process of creative collaboration and transformation which is beneficial to all parties involved. It emphasizes the significance of small actions and advocates that they can have a big and cumulative effect. Transformative leadership is increasingly relevant in today’s more complex, rapidly evolving, challenging, and competitive work environment where leaders are struggling to maintain followers’ trust. Merging the two leadership concepts, namely self-leadership and transformative leadership, it enables an individual to effectively lead both others and his- or her-self in the future workforce.

In this chapter, we would recommend the cutting-edge and contemporary transformative and self-leadership strategies which can be used to meet the changing, complex, and dynamic work landscape of the future.
