ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out the aim of the book and clarifies important definitions and themes. It outlines the trajectory of the book and the chapters. It explains that philosophies of the other are set alongside and in dialogue with different writers in disability studies. The chapter explores the negative experiences of people with disabilities in general and with profound disabilities in particular described in various UK government documents. In discussing the terms ‘other’ and ‘othering’ the chapter explores appeals to equality and rights legislation, models of disability, and the language of the other. The chapter then introduces the themes of personalism.
