ABSTRACT

Who were the foreigners among ancient Maya peoples? Archaeological investigations over the past century have drawn from diverse tropes of foreigners, outsiders, strangers, and migrants. Perhaps the most notorious, albeit controversial, among these tropes is that of the stranger king and associated with him, in some cases, an invading settler society. In addition to stranger-kings and settler societies, however, this chapter also highlights foreigners and outsiders from other relational standpoints, such as those from feminist and commoner migrants’ perspectives. In particular, it explores stranger queens and outsider wives, cosmopolitan settlements, and new communities established by humble migrants.
