ABSTRACT

In the United States (US), beach soccer offers a remarkable view of an associated football code that has developed largely away from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), indeed largely outside the influence of US Soccer, the national governing body. The national men's and women's beach soccer teams participate in Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW) and FIFA tournaments under the banner of US Soccer, but myriad extra-mural community, commercial and professional events and competitions occur annually. This chapter examines a selection of illustrative models of operation in use between 1992 and 2012, including the development of the world's largest beach soccer tournament, the North American Sand Soccer Championships (NASSC). In unpacking the range of forms, the significant developments, and the histories of various models, this chapter presents an informed view of US beach soccer during the first two decades of its development.
