ABSTRACT
Uncovering and mapping the currently incomplete histories of beach soccer provides an invaluable platform on which to grow our understanding of one of the world's fastest-growing sports. We have identified its origins, tracked its evolution, and related contentions; we considered its development in a range of countries and sought to provide insight on the ways beach soccer operates outside its own mainstream. There are many areas of the game, divergences in its development, similarities across regions and tensions in its growth that warrant further investigation. In looking at the contemporary picture, we note tensions in the drive for growth and highlight areas for further research.
