ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 advances the discussions offered in previous chapters, with an emphasis on police investigations, the work of liaison and diversion services and how to screen for speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) during the stages of investigations, interviews and court proceedings.

While the case is made for SLCN screening, the reader is offered practical information and resources to support this activity, including signposting to online appendices for use in practice.

Details around the vulnerability of people with SLCN are explored and the registered intermediary role is articulated. The vulnerabilities explored in the chapter encompass mental ill-health, learning disabilities, developmental conditions and acquired conditions so that there is content applicable to every potential speech and language therapy client. Information is supplemented by case studies and visual figures throughout the chapter to support the reader to locate theory in practical examples.
