ABSTRACT

This final chapter concludes the narrative thread of this book which has explored what crime is, how the criminal justice system works, the speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) of people in contact with the criminal justice system, the criminal justice pathway and how speech and language therapists can provide screening, assessment and intervention at each stage of the journey from initial police contact to returning to life outside of the criminal justice system.

The chapter offers practical information on the speech and language therapy (SLT) scope of practice, relational security and the risk of homelessness which is faced by people with SLCN when they leave prison. SLT training and supervision needs are addressed. The chapter concludes with important information on self-compassion and self-care so that professional burnout can be avoided when working with a client group that may include emotionally difficult cases for staff to manage.
