ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I introduce a new conceptual framework for the analysis of political economy of organ supply. This economy is the interaction between three divides: the divide between organs taken from the living and organs taken from the dead; the divide between the public sphere where organs are procured and channeled by formal state agencies and the private sphere where organs are procured through social capital; the divide between state, market, and family (the classical structure of political economy) as three social institutions with unique moral regimes for the interaction between organ supplier and organ donor. The intersection of these components composes the scheme for political analysis of organ supply.
