ABSTRACT

Drawing upon the scheme introduced in the previous chapter, this chapter presents trends in the global organ economy. Using the source of organs (dead or living) as an indicator of formal and informal organ procuring system, I present empirical data regarding the formal economy in different parts of the world. I call on countries that have a high percentage of post-mortem organ economy, ethical and legal codes of organ economy regulation, and public campaign to increase donation rates – core countries. Countries that have a dual economy elaborate transplant infrastructure, legal and ethical coding, and public campaigns – semi-peripheral countries, and countries with a high percentage of organ supply from living sources – peripheral countries. By examining countries from these three clusters, I point to the constant rise in informal procurement mechanisms.
