ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the mental skill mental imagery. Mental imagery is a powerful mental skill that involves using all of the senses to create an imagined event that is as close as possible to a real event. If used well, mental imagery can improve the performance and mental health of circus artists. The chapter starts with background information about the purpose and practice of cognitive and motivational imagery in circus. Then, the importance of imagery ability is discussed. Practice tools that can be used to test circus artists’ imagery controllability and vividness are provided. Following this, the PETTLEP guidelines for effective imagery scripts are explained in relation to the circus context. The chapter concludes with an example of an imagery script that can be used to achieve relaxation.
