ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on creating a circus environment that nurtures psychological well-being, safety, and thriving. First, the importance of self-confidence is discussed, and four factors that impact on the formation of self-confidence in circus artists are explained. Then, the chapter focusses on body image and body objectification in the circus industry. Advice is provided on how to minimise the negative impact of clothing, social media, and mirrors in circus artists’ levels of body objectification. Then, the chapter delves into four strategies of transformational leadership that will empower circus artists, namely idealised influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualised consideration. The chapter concludes with information about establishing consent in circus.
