ABSTRACT

Chapter Eight contends that we must partner with the one constituency that holds the key to progress: parents. There has always been some concern on the part of parents that teachers inappropriately speak from a “soap box.” These days, there is particular concern over the prospect of “indoctrination” in schools, which has fueled opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives—to which some refer, broadly, as “critical race theory” (CRT). If we are serious about preparing students to navigate a divided country, we need to open the lines of communication between school and parents when it comes to matters that either party would consider “political.”
