ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the methodological approach that undergirds the research outlined in this book. Notably, the chapter sets the stage for understanding the logic of the methodology by outlining relevant elements of the research context, such as the recent history of encounter between international humanitarian actors and the local population. It also provides an overview of changes to the research question and design. The chapter provides an overview of the legal-justice institutions and practices available in Uvira, the primary research site. Additionally, the author outlines analyses of the strengths and weaknesses of working with interpreters, noting how their contributions to research tend to be undervalued. Finally, the chapter outlines some important ethical considerations, such as reflexivity, reciprocity, and re-presentation.
