ABSTRACT

Human rights violations against lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) people are a global concern. Impunity for acts of violence (both online and offline), discriminatory legislation and State practice contribute to an environment in which LGBTQI people are often silenced and marginalized, and deprived of their fundamental human rights, including the freedom to express their identities, freedom of speech, of opinion, among others. As persistent use of sexist, racial and xenophobic arguments, misinformation and incitement to violence against sexual minorities permeate media and political discourses, in particular through the Internet, there is an urgent need to examine and render visible LGBTQI cultural resistance, expressed through digital media activism and counter-hate discourse. This chapter presents the context of this research, as well as the main theoretical and conceptual frameworks developed for this study.
